So there we are. At the end of 2020 and slowly looking towards 2021. What kind of strategy games has the year brought us? I think quite a lot! It certainly wasn’t the best year ever. But personally I had a lot of fun with a lot of strategy games this year! I was more than happy with Desperados 3 alone. This game saved my summer to some extent. I don’t regret a minute in which I worked my way step by step through this picturesque western environment and snuck off dozens of gunslingers from ambush on the way.
My second highlight in 2020 was also Crusader Kings 3. I avoided this series for years, even though it actually has everything I like. Middle age? Check! Intrigues at court? Check! Absurd stories the player writes? Check! And now I’ve finally dared to do it and sunk into it. No other game this year has made me whistle so much that I have to get up early the next morning. What are long dark circles when I strive for the imperial crown!
So I’m not at all surprised that many new titles made it into our top 20 with the best ratings at the end of the year. Sure, something was lost in the crowd and the Warcraft 3 debacle still hurts, but when it comes to strategy games, 2020 did a solid job. Let’s see how it looks next year. I am still skeptical whether we can expect a similarly good year in the next 12 months.
