GameStar selects the best PC role-playing games of all time – and dear, there will be a squabble about it – even our columnist Christian Schiffer criticizes the top 100 list of role-playing games ! We can already hear the comments rumbling: »The Witcher is probably not a role-playing game, but wild action clicks. If Deus Ex is rated as an RPG, then Bioshock should be included in the ranking! Holy CRPGs like Baldur’s Gate are never allowed to stand next to a JRPG. And who on earth calls Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey an RPG ?! Yes, dear GameStar, are you crazy? “
Of course we are a bit crazy, after all, we are realizing the crazy idea of condensing the personal opinions of two dozen editors into a large role-playing game ranking. And at least as crazy: We want you to object! Give us our opinion, defend your role-playing games, discussing, celebrating and cursing (not for minors), because all of this only proves what a passionate genre role-playing games actually are.
Video recaps with Stay Forever
Christian Schmidt and Gunnar Lott were GameStar editors like us, but then they got an arrow in the knee. Today they are podcasting about retro games at Stay Forever . During a visit to the editorial office, we pushed Chris and Gunnar in front of the camera to look back with them on the ten best-placed role-playing games on this list. The result was around 90 video minutes full of anecdotes and discussions, spread over ten video reviews exclusively for GameStar Plus .In addition, at GameStar Plus you will find many more videos, reports and columns related to the role play weeks.
For decades, players have been giving away their hearts to the Ultimas, Skyrims, Witchers and World of Warcrafts of this world, churning hundreds of hours into their favorite RPG. We share this passion, and in order to celebrate it as comprehensively as possible, we approach this endeavor with a very broad role-playing game definition : Baldur’s Gate, Ultima Online and Final Fantasy 7 count for us as role-playing games as well as Deus Ex, Dark Souls and Gothic. Just like we’ve been doing in our genre hit list since 1997 – whether in the magazine or online .
However, we would like to emphasize again that the top 100 role-playing games are our personal favorites. The list does not claim to be complete or to be universally valid. But we firmly believe that we have put together a really apt collection here. And after the unveiling of place 1, we will start a community round in which you can pitch your favorite role-playing games for us. The best posts get pretty fat prices , but more on that later.
How does this ranking work?
The starting shot will be given on July 20th, and GameStar will be celebrating the big RPG party. We present the places 100 to 91. After that we reveal (as with the 250 best PC games of all time ) new placements every day. On Sunday, positions 90 to 81, on Monday then 80 to 71 and so on. We make it particularly exciting for the top 10: From July 29th we will choose two finalists every day, morning and evening. If you have now included, you will find mathematically precise: The last curtain will fall on August 2nd – 1st place will be chosen. In the two weeks until then you will find the full role-playing offensive on GameStar.de. Podcasts, lots of exciting plus articles and a series of review videos with Christian Schmidt and Gunnar Lott from Stay Forever are published on the subject.
